Golden RCMP warning residents of fake gold scam

The Golden-Field RCMP is urging residents to be cautious of a fake gold scam.

Police said the scam involves multiple people and an elaborate con that can change in each scenario.

Last week the Golden RCMP had a report that a man, a woman and a child pulled up to a gas station in an expensive rental car asking for assistance with gas money claiming they had lost their wallet.

The victim bought the family food and gas and was given a fake gold chain in return.

Police said the family tried to get more money and the victim became suspicious and called 911.

They said there have been reports of a scam like this every year in Golden since 2020.

Sometimes the fraudsters will claim to be very wealthy foreigners from the Middle East and offer expensive gold jewelry in return for money. The jewelry is then later discovered to be fake.

“They can put on a very compelling show, and unfortunately prey on people’s trust and kindness,” said Golden-Field RCMP Constable Kat Robinson.

“We are hoping that by sharing this information with the public, we can help prevent locals from becoming victims, because it does happen in small towns like ours.”

Anyone who is approached by such a group should walk away and call 911 immediately.
