Bylaw changes for housing in former Fernie firehall passes third reading

Converting the former Fernie firehall into a mix of retail and residential is one step closer to adoption.

The third reading was given during the July 9 council meeting after a public hearing was held.

The city is looking to change the land use designation from institutional to historic downtown and the zoning from public institutional to retail commercial.

This would allow commercial space on the ground floor and rental units up above.

“It would be sorely needed in our downtown and it creates opportunities for a walkable community given there’s a grocery store and commercial uses such as banks and healthcare facilities downtown,” said planning director Bruce Lennox.

Units will likely be a mix of studio, one, and two-bedroom units.
