Kimberley City Council will consider possible regulations on future drive-through developments in the community.
The decision included the possibility of a full-on ban for this type of business in the future.
“The feeling around the council table was that bans of any sort, including service stations and drive-throughs, are not a good thing,” said Mayor Don McCormick.
“Flexibility needs to remain open and developments need to be assessed on their own merit.”
As a result, Council felt introducing some kind of policy that would still allow those types of businesses was a more sensible approach.
“We would much rather take a look at how we might regulate drive-throughs and service stations, should they be part of development proposals in the future,” said McCormick.
“Staff will put together a report on what those regulations might look like for future council consideration.”
McCormick said there are no specific developments at the heart of this decision, rather this is policy considerations for future proposals.
“Most people think if you do something once, it sets a precedent for future behaviour. That is in fact not the case for city council,” explained McCormick.
“Everything is different and our job is to provide consideration to every proposal as unique.”
There is no set timeline as to when the motion for regulations will return to council chambers.
