Rescue crews search for missing man along Kootenay River

Search and Rescue teams and local RCMP are searching for a man who went missing along the Kootenay River on Friday afternoon, June 28.

According to police, the man went missing after he went into the water to catch up to his boat when it was dislodged from the shore.

“Although reported to be a strong swimmer, the man has since gone missing,” said Cranbrook RCMP spokesperson Cst Katie Forgeron.

Police jumped into action with drone operators while a Search and Rescue team took to the skies in a helicopter.

“At this time Search and Rescue is still conducting water patrols as well as searching along the shoreline,” said Forgeron.

“The public is asked to avoid the area while the search operation is underway.”

Police urge the public to be on the lookout in the area.

“We are also asking that any possible sightings be directed to the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471”, said Forgeron.
