Fernie residents will have the chance to voice concerns or ask questions about proposed zoning changes to convert the former firehall into a mixed commercial and residential building.

The public hearing will be held on July 9 at 6:30 PM at the Senior Citizens Drop-In Centre.

The city is looking to change the land use designation from institutional to historic downtown and the zoning from public institutional to retail commercial.

The proposed development would feature commercial space on the ground floor and long-term rentals above.

Rentals would likely be a mix of studio, one, and two-bedroom units.

“Leveraging City-owned property to improve affordable housing availability and the diversity of housing types is a key facet of council’s strategic plan,” said Mayor Nic Milligan.

If you can’t attend the public hearing in person, written submissions can be dropped off or mailed to the municipal office before 2 p.m. on July 9.
