Cranbrook reservoir sees further reduction in creek flow

Cranbrook City administration has measured a further reduction of water flowing from Joseph and Gold Creek into Phillips Reservoir, even as it holds full pool.

City officials said the average flow through the reservoir sits at 3.65 million gallons per day, an increase of 3.2 million gallons per day reported two weeks ago.

“Increased outdoor water use for lawns and gardens continues to be the most significant driver behind the increase of water flow through the reservoir,” said the city.

Despite nearly 15 millimetres of rain since June 4, Gold Creek reservoir has dropped again since June 10.

The city has decided to close the Gold Creek floodgates as a result, to help preserve as much water as possible.

“We have one of our production wells online now, helping to add an additional 386 thousand gallons of water to the system daily, with another of our production wells expected to come online later in July,” said Jason Perrault, Deputy Director of Public Works.

Cranbrook is still on stage two water restrictions for now.

“Even with the additional water in the system, we continue to ask residents to remain committed to our current water restrictions,” said Perrault.

“The commitment of our residents so far this year has been excellent, and we encourage people to continue to do so.”

Under stage two, even-numbered properties can water on Monday and Thursday while odd-numbered properties can water on Tuesday and Friday.

No watering is allowed on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

You can run your sprinkler from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on your watering day.
