College to offer help as students struggle to find housing

A shortage of housing options has long-plagued College of the Rockies students, and officials hope a new partnership will offer some relief.

Leah Bradish, Dean of Continuing Education and Regional Access, said this is not a particularly new issue.

“We’ve always had some challenges for students finding housing, especially in our resort communities. In recent years, it seems to have become more acute,” said Bradish.

“We’ve had students live in hostels or couch-surfed for an extended period of time. We’ve also seen students who have to move every few months before finding appropriate housing.”

Bradish said unstable housing can have an impact on students’ education.

“Student housing is a big piece of whether or not they’re successful in their program,” said Bradish. “If you’re worried about housing, you’re not focused on your studies.”

The college has partnered with Happipad in hopes of alleviating some of the pressure.

The service matches homeowners who have extra space with students who need a place to stay.

“We’re really hoping that homeowners in the region step up if they have available space and they’re willing to rent to a student,” said Bradish.

“Much of the benefit for homeowners is a little bit of extra income and we hope it can create some friendships.”
