The District of Invermere is trying out a new pedestrian-only downtown space along a section of 12th Street for the summer.
Mayor Al Miller hopes this will be a welcomed addition to the community.
“I’ve been an advocate for pedestrian-friendly areas downtown for a long time, and I think this is going to be a good test zone,” said Miller.
“We’re going to be able to have a good amount of people in that area, which includes the cenotaph.”
The Invermere Business Committee and the District worked together to make this space a reality.
This year is a trial run to learn how a car-free space works in the community before considering it as a fixture.
“The Invermere Business Committee is going to test it out and see how they like it,” said Miller.
“If it works out well, I’d imagine they’ll request that it stays in place or returns next year with a little bit more permanency.”
Miller said pedestrian-friendly spaces are necessary to create a thriving downtown core.
“If you want people to stay in your downtown area and enjoy the shopping and food opportunities, you need to provide a welcoming space,” said Miller. “There’s some shrubbery, it’s blocked off and it’s safe.”
Parking in front of the post office will remain available.
“Our staff worked really hard to make sure it’s convenient for young and old to access the post office or the stores in that area,” said Miller. “We really want people to give it a try, and I think they’re going to like it.”
This space will be open to residents and visitors until Sept 9, with various events planned throughout the summer.
