Planning for the Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) rural Elk Valley official community plan (OCP) has begun.

RDEK officials said the current OCP is showing its age.

“It has been 10 years since the Elk Valley OCP was adopted and it is time for it to be reviewed and updated so that it reflects the community’s current vision for the future,” said RDEK Planning Supervisor, Karen Macleod.

“The planning process will include extensive public engagement and consultation and will focus on developing policies that are reflective of current community perspectives.”

The RDEK said developing the new OCP is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete.

“I’ve heard from many residents over the past few months about the need for an updated OCP, so I am excited to see this project underway,” said RDEK Electoral Area A Director Thomas McDonald.

“As opportunities for public engagement and input come up, I encourage all residents and property owners in Area A to participate. The more participation we have, the better this plan will be.”

RDEK officials said the first engagement session began with a public survey, which will be open until Aug 31.

The RDEK is working to form an advisory committee to be involved throughout the planning process, with applications to open in the coming weeks.
