Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka was elected as BC United’s official Caucus Chair, becoming the first Kootenay-based MLA to hold the role in the party.

“It comes with a lot of responsibilities, but the fact that they all had the faith in me to lead the caucus in meetings and be a part of that executive team for BC United meant a lot,” said Shypitka.

The Caucus Chair is responsible for orchestrating party meetings.

“When we have our caucus meetings, which are at least once a week, I’ll be the one in charge of leading those meetings and making sure that all voices are heard,” explained Shypitka.

“I’ll also be in charge of bringing the team together by reaching out to all the caucus members and engaging in conversation, hearing what they have to say about any issues they’re concerned with and bringing those to senior executives.”

Shypitka said he will stay active in the Legislature, as he will keep his position as Shadow Minister for Mines and Low Carbon Innovation.

“I’m doubling down on the duties, and I’m also Deputy Chair of the Finance Committee, so I’m going to be very busy between those three roles,” said Shypitka. “It’s a labour of love and I love doing it and I love representing the Kootenays.”

Shypitka was voted into the role after former BC United Caucus Chair, Lorne Doerkson, defected to the BC Conservative Party in late May.
