The District of Sparwood is planning to update its grant policy on wildlife attractant tree replacement.
Currently, the district offers residents grants for removing a wildlife attractant tree and replacing it with a non-attractant species.
They are looking at expanding that for residents only interested in removing existing trees.
It would look like the WildSafeBC grant program that has since ended.
“Previously the WildSafeBC program provided funding for the removal of up to three eligible trees on a property,” said Sparwood Planning Technician, Jessica Wheeler.
“They paid $400 for the first tree and $150 each for the second and third.”
If the changes are approved by council, grant users will have to show proof.
“Applicants would only receive the grant up to a certain dollar amount if they provided a quote from a professional service with their application,” Wheeler added.
“That could include an arborist to remove the tree or the rental of equipment to help remove the tree.”
This comes as Sparwood has been trying to lessen the wildlife attractants in the community, especially for bears.
