Kimberley City Council is deciding on what the community’s future will look like as discussions of possible drive-through and gas station regulations continue.
Council members voted to hold a separate meeting for more deliberation.
“Council members were generally not in favour of a ban, but we agreed that we need some additional conversation on how we approach both development types,” said Mayor Don McCormick.
“We’re going to have a general conversation about what we’re trying to achieve, what the goal is and what the best path would be before we get staff to do any further work.”
McCormick said it is crucial for council to take their time with controversial bylaws.
“There’s always a stack of reasons for and a stack of reasons against, so it can be very difficult to come to a consensus,” said McCormick.
“We’re going to talk more about the specifics once we decide what our overall goals are.”
The proposal comes after the city gathered public sentiment on the possibility of regulating or banning more drive-through-style businesses and gas stations in the community.
“When council turned down a motion to rezone some industrial land in Marysville to commercial, there was a motion to have staff do some homework,” said McCormick.
“Staff were to come back with some data and policy recommendations on how we deal with those two types of developments.”
A date for the special council meeting has not been set but McCormick said it will be soon.
“There is a whole list of reasons why we need to look at what we’re trying to do and we’re looking forward to that conversation,” said McCormick.
