Elk Valley RCMP has laid charges in a two-year-old vandalism case at the Fernie Aquatic Centre.

Police officials said 22-year-old Aden Shatalow-Dominick was charged with Mischief over $5,000 for involvement in the incident.

On Oct. 29, 2022, police investigated extensive damage to the Fernie Aquatic Centre that rendered the pool unusable.

Investigators found several broken windows on the upper level, with rocks and glass shards in the pool.

This required serious repair work and police officials said it deeply impacted Fernie, with window repair, pool cleaning and equipment maintenance costs exceeding $30,000.

All public access to the pool was cancelled while clean up and repairs were made.

The closure resulted in the Elk Valley Dolphins moving their swim meet to Cranbrook’s Western Financial Place.

“The Elk Valley RCMP extends its gratitude to the community of Fernie for their patience throughout this investigation,” said, Detachment Commander Staff Sgt. Svend Nielsen.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Elk Valley RCMP at 250-425-6233.
