Cranbrook city council has decided Gyro Park will be the preferred childcare location for the city’s application to the BC ChildCare New Spaces Grant.
The grant provides 100 per cent of funding to create new licensed childcare facilities.
The city issued a request for proposals for contractors who could assist in the planning and design of a new facility back in January and ended up partnering with Nelson-based Cover Architecture Collaborative Inc.
Council received a list of potential locations for a new centre and settled on a portion of Gyro Park.
“I drive by it every day,” said councillor Ron Popoff.
“The pickleball courts and playground get utilized, but that’s only about a third of the property. The vast two-thirds don’t even see people walking their dogs on there.”
He adds that the location of the park makes perfect sense.
“This is a very suitable area because it’s an underutilized area right in the middle of a huge residential area, with three elementary schools wrapped around it.”
Other locations included Pop Price Park, Quad Ball Diamonds, Highlands, Mount Baker RV Campground and Moir Park North.
The city is planning to have an application ready for the province by the end of June.
