A 40-year-old Fernie man was arrested during an attempted break and enter Monday evening.

Elk Valley RCMP officials said a man with no shirt or shoes was attempting to break into a home in the 600 block of Fernie’s 9th Avenue.

Police responded to the call shortly after 6 p.m., but the man was able to get inside before officers arrived.

Once at the scene, an officer confronted the man, who raised his fists in a motion to fight.

Police officials said the officer attempted to arrest the man, but he swung and punched the officer in the forehead.

In response, the officer deployed his taser (Conducted Energy Weapon) but was unsuccessful.

Another officer arrived to see the suspect fighting back before using his own taser.

“The officer deployed a CEW successfully, but the suspect continued to struggle, yelling out at times ‘I like pain,'” said RCMP officials.

It took two charges from the taser to take the suspect down, but he continued to struggle after getting handcuffed.

“BC Ambulance attended to check on the man prior to his being lodged as per the request of the officers, but he refused care,” said RCMP officials.

“The suspect was successfully transported to Sparwood cells without further incident.”

The man remains in custody pending a bail hearing.

No witnesses were hurt and the investigation is ongoing.

“It appears that other calls were made regarding this man at different locations in Fernie throughout the afternoon, mainly dealing with his being an unwanted person, but he was not located,” said the Elk Valley RCMP.
