Moyie is getting closer to having it own fire department with a fundraiser is set for July 1.
The project has been in the works for about 10 years, however, has been running a volunteer fire department up until now.
Bill Sanderson said the building is coming along nicely, but getting insurance can be a challenge.
“The big thing right now is we’re trying to get some liability insurance and hopefully, we’ll have that in place and be a working fire department real quick,” he said.
“A lot of the insurance companies now will not insure volunteer fire departments so it comes back to the province and the regional district. We’re working with them right now to try to get some insurance in place.”
He said they wouldn’t be where they are now without help from residents.
“The community has done an amazing job of stepping up to help with the construction of the hall,” added Sanderson.
“Basically, we’ve framed it ourselves, put the trusses on and all the land clearing was done by volunteers. They’ve done a remarkable job.”
The fundraiser will take place at the Lakeside Grill from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 1.
“It’s going to be a long day for sure but it’s something that needs to be done,” said Sanderson.
“This is how we fund all of our operational costs like insurance, electricity or propane. It all comes out of this fund.”
