The Regional District of East Kootenay spent Emergency Preparedness Week helping residents sign up for their alert system and teaching the importance of preparation.
“It looks like it’s going to be a bit of a dry spring. We’re starting to get some green-up, but we’ve already seen some brush fires,” said RDEK board chair Rob Gay.
“We are certainly trying to get the word out about our Voyent Alert system. If people register for that and there’s something in their area, that’s the quickest way for us to get ahold of them.”
Chair Gay said residents can play a role in emergency preparation as well.
“FireSmart talks about having a green space around your home, avoid using flammable materials like cedar shakes when you’re replacing your roof,” said Gay.
“FireSmart starts at home, and your emergency kit starts at home.”
You can prepare an emergency kit or “go bag” by having important documents, prescription medications, and any other emergency supplies in one, easily accessible place.
“If things go well, we can send out an emergency alert, in that it may be coming, but we don’t always get that step,” said Gay. “Sometimes we go from no emergency to an evacuation, so you should have your emergency kit ready.”
