East Kootenay FireSmart hosting three May 4 events

Three community preparedness events are scheduled for Saturday, to help residents be better equipped for wildfires.

“This is a national campaign that encourages citizens to take actions that increase their home, neighbourhood and community’s resilience to wildfire,” said RDEK protective services manager, Christina Carbrey.

“We have seen the very real and devastating effects that wildfire can have right here in our region, and we are urging residents to learn more about how they can prepare themselves and their families in case of wildfire emergency.”

There will be preparedness fairs at the Jaffray Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Western Financial Place in Cranbrook from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at the Invermere Home Hardware from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents will hear from experts on how to prepare their home, property, and family in case of a wildfire.

“The responsibility for being prepared in case of emergency belongs to everyone,” said Carbrey.

“This day is a great time to focus on educating yourself, your family, and your workplace on what it means to be ready for wildfire.”
