Police in Cranbrook are urging residents to adopt a 9 p.m. routine to help prevent theft.
The local detachment recommends setting an alarm at 9 p.m. as a reminder to remove valuables from your vehicle, lock vehicle doors and make sure all garage, shed and home locks are secure.
“Cranbrook RCMP has seen a recent increase in theft from vehicles with the warmer weather,” said Constable Katie Forgeron in a release.
“Thieves generally look for easy targets. Many thefts from vehicles occur because of vehicles being left unlocked. Thieves walk through neighbourhoods, trying vehicle door handles, hoping to find an unlocked vehicle.”
The Cranbrook RCMP is also reminding residents to use the online reporting tool.
It was launched in 2020 and is meant for less serious crimes where there is no suspect or witness and follow-up by an officer isn’t needed.
