Prescribed burn to spark near Kimberley

The City of Kimberley will spark a prescribed burn about eight kilometres south of the community next week.

BC Wildfire Service officials said the burn will cover about 20 hectares in the Matthew Creek area.

Work could begin on Tuesday, but the exact timing will depend on local weather and conditions.

You will likely be able to see smoke from Kimberley, surrounding communities, Highway 95A and St. Mary Lake Road.

“Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable to achieve objectives and allow for smoke dispersal, though smoke may linger in the following days, particularly the morning after burn operations,” said BC Wildfire Service officials.

“Despite all precautions to manage it, unintended smoke impacts are possible after any burn.”

Officials said the prescribed burn is meant to reduce wildfire threats by getting rid of potential fuel sources.
