Construction on Fernie’s new and improved skatepark is almost complete, with a grand opening set for next month.
While not fully open, local skaters have already been having their fair share of pop shuvits and melon grabs.
“I rode my bike by there the other day and lots of kids are already in there and taking advantage of the pre-opening,” said Mayor Nic Milligan.
“I’m really looking forward to it being fully open and it’s a great community asset and more accessible than it used to be.”
Milligan said the park will be a lot easier for everyone to enjoy.
“It reduces barriers for people with mobility issues getting into the park and as such they can access it more freely.”
The big feature of the new park is the covered pool bowl for more year-round use.
The contractor is still doing some final repairs to the covering so the pool bowl is closed for the time being.
A date has yet to be set for the grand opening, but it’s planned for sometime in May.
