Mayor Don McCormick is excited to see Kimberley as the host city for the 2024 Junior A Tier II Provincial Championship and the economic boost it brings.
McCormick said it will help the community in a slower time of the year.
“It’s yet another event coming to town and in particular now because were in the shoulder season with the ski hill closing last weekend,” he said.
There will be more people in Kimberley spending money locally.
“This is a really nice filler for all our accommodators, restaurants and other shops in town,” McCormick added.
It’s also an excuse to watch some local hockey even though the KIJHL season has ended.
“We’re really excited to be hosting these Junior A Championships,” he said.
“Kimberley has a long history of hockey in town dating back to a world championship back in 1937.”
The Dynamiters are the host team and now know who their opponents are.
The Ridge Meadows Flames of the Pacific Junior Hockey League and the Sannich Predators of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League will compete, while the Revelstoke Grizzlies will join the Nitros in representing the KIJHL.
The tournament runs from April 18-21. The Dynamiters’ first game will be against the Flames.
