Cranbrook city council provided advance budget approval for almost $10 million for renovations to the city’s RCMP detachment.
City staff said the building is in need of modifications due to age, updated building codes and updated RCMP design requirements.
The building was built in 1960 with a larger addition in 1976 and has not seen significant upgrades in over 40 years.
The renovation would address structural upgrades, safety concerns, hazardous materials, functionality, capacity constraints, HVAC upgrades and accessibility.
It would also leave the possibility of adding another floor in the future.
The project has a $7,980,000 construction cost plus a 25 per cent contingency, bringing the budget to $9,975,000.
The advance budget approval allows staff to continue with the building design, borrowing and construction.
City staff said borrowing for the project is expected to take at least six months.
They hope to begin tendering late in 2024.
