Maintenance at Skookumchuck Pulp Causing Stinky Smell

The Skookumchuck Pulp Mill is undergoing maintenance this week and is venting off odorous gases, causing a stinky smell to linger the air.

According to Paper Excellence, Skookumchuck Pulp began maintenance on December 2nd and will continue that work up until December 8th.

“They have communicated with the Ministry of the Environment the need to vent some odorous gasses,” said Brandy Craig in a statement to MyEastKootenayNow.com, Environmental Supervisor at Skookumchuck Pulp. “They’ll be monitoring the air quality.”

Craig said maintenance work is required on their incinerator, which would normally collect the odorous gases and incinerate them, but is currently down for the time being as the maintenance is completed.

“This is not routine maintenance, it is an unexpected repair,” Craig told MyEastKootenayNow.com.

Although maintenance is planned until December 8th, the work could be done sooner.

Here’s the full statement from Brandy Craig, Supervisor at Skookumchuck Pulp:

“Starting on December 2nd, our neighbour Skookumchuck Pulp is doing some maintenance at the mill. They have communicated with the Ministry of the Environment the need to vent some odorous gasses. They’ll be monitoring the air quality. This maintenance work is required on the system that normally collects those gases and incinerates them. They anticipate the work to be wrapped up on or before December 8th.”
