Fernie city council has approved an increase and a two-tier system to address residents leaving out wildlife attractants.
Under the new system, accumulation, placement, storage or collection of wildlife attractants in a manner that attracts wildlife could get you a fine.
Previously it would only be a $50 fine.
Now it is a two-tiered system. The first fine is $250 and if there is another offence within the calendar year the fine will jump up to $500.

Once the calendar year is up it will go back to a $250 fine.
The hope is to deter people from attracting animals into the community which can often lead to wildlife having to be killed.
