The B.C. government has given the Cranbrook Archives, Museum and Landmark Foundation $1 million to wrap up Phase 2 of a project that will protect the museum’s railcars.
Cranbrook History Centre chair Bob Whetham explains what the project will do.
“This will basically put a roof and supports over the cars,” he said.
“There may be some other details to follow in a future phase, but this will be the structure that will provide the cover that you’ll see from Van Horne Street. So all of those cars will be covered.”
He said the finished project will help keep the centre as a tourist destination.
“Enhancing the external appearance of the museum will contribute to the overall impression of visitors to the City and form a significant element in the goal to strengthen Cranbrook’s position as a tourist destination.”
Wetham said the collection is very unique.
“I don’t think there are any other collections of full sets of cars for a named train. What we have is really the peak of luxury travel and it’s represented in our museum. Those are the cars that are on tour today and the ones we really want to finish protecting.”
Construction is expected to start in the fall and the roof should be completed sometime next year.
He also wanted to thank BC Heritage and the RDEK for their support.
