Fernie swears in new mayor and council

Fernie’s inaugural council meeting saw the official swearing-in of Mayor Nic Milligan and the city’s new council.

Milligan steps into the role after taking 68.5 per cent of the vote in the local election.

“I’d like to thank all of Fernie, for those who voted in the election and placed their trust in us,” said Milligan. “We will honour that trust by working hard on your behalf, by being fair, honest and compassionate and by working together to build a stronger Fernie.”

In his first address to the community, Milligan said he hopes to build a good team within council chambers.

“We all want what is best for Fernie, and we understand that our role is about leadership and service to the community,” said Milligan. “We must always treat each other with respect, and remember that kindness engenders kindness in return.”

Milligan went on to say council members are encouraged to engage with residents.

“We need to understand your needs and the challenges you face every day. We serve all the people of Fernie, and we owe you every effort to ensure we maintained and improve our collective quality of life,” said Milligan.

Incumbents Kevin McIsaac, Kyle Hamilton and Troy Nixon were re-elected to city council alongside newcomers Harsh Ramadass, Ted Shoesmith and Tracey Kelly.
