RCMP Respond as Laurie Middle School Goes Into Lockdown

Cranbrook RCMP arrived at Laurie Middle School in response to a lockdown early afternoon on October 24.

Police were notified around 1:00 pm of a student carrying what appeared to be a gun through the school hallway.

RCMP said the school immediately went into lockdown as police were on the scene searching for those responsible for the incident.

Two students were quickly identified and taken into custody, and further investigation located an airsoft rifle and a cap gun. Both of which were seized as part of the investigation.

“Thankfully, due to the schools’ quick response and the involvement of the RCMP, the situation was quickly defused,” said School District No. 5

Police say the two students were released to their parents shortly after without charges.

“The staff, the students were amazing at Laurie, during the lockdown process,” said Constable Kathy Forgeron. “We were there for quite some time before they were allowed out of their classrooms. You couldn’t hear a mouse in those hallways, they did a great job.”

Once the school was cleared, RCMP met with staff and students to inform them of the reason behind the lockdown.
