Sparwood residents have an opportunity to learn more about the Cummings Creek wildfire.
“Representatives from the BC Wildfire Service will be in attendance to provide residents with an update on the Cummings Creek fire,” said Regional Information Officer Loree Duczek. “This fire is quite visible from Highway 43 and this meeting is a good opportunity for residents to get the latest information.”
The info session will start at 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Sparwood Recreation & Leisure Centre with a Q&A set for 8:45.
Wildfire Service officials say the fire is particularly challenging, as it’s burning in steep terrain, and smoke is limiting air support.
The fire has been burning about 5 km west of Sparwood since August 3rd, Officials estimate the lightning-caused fire to be about 43 hectares in size.
BC Wildfire Service officials said fire apparatus, structure protection unit trailers and personnel will be moving into Sparwood on Monday as a precautionary measure.
“Most of these individuals will be structure protection personnel that will be triaging and assessing properties in the Sparwood area. This work is being done in a proactive manner to establish adequate positioning if required,” said officials. “Currently the community of Sparwood is not imminently threatened, however, we want to give our structure protection personnel ample amount of time to deploy structure protection apparatus in the event of the fire progressing closer to the community of Sparwood.”
