A pair of bylaws are up for a public hearing this month, aimed at rezoning a plot of land for a possible school expansion or replacement.
“The school district has purchased this particular piece of land that’s directly behind the Eileen Madson school,” said Mayor Al Miller. “The idea being that they’re planning for the future.”
The property in question is located at the 2100 Block of 15th Avenue.
Mayor Al Miller said the Rocky Mountain School District (SD6) board is considering several choices with the land.
“The school is starting to age out a little bit. They take good care of it, but size, I’m guessing, is becoming a little bit problematic,” said Miller. “Our population is increasing, so looking toward the future I’m sure they’re looking at possibilities of expansion or a new school.”
The two bylaws, if passed, would change the usage designation from rural residential and rural resource to public institutional zoning.
According to district council documents, the proposal was initially sent in by SD6 on March 1, 2022.
The public hearing is set for June 21st at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Valley Centre.
