New supportive housing opens in Invermere

A new affordable rental complex has opened in Invermere for families, seniors, women and children leaving violent situations.

B.C. government officials said the 30-unit development, named Invermere Farmhouse, includes six townhouses with a mix of one, two and three-bedroom units.

15 homes are for families and seniors with low income, with monthly rent set at an affordable rate, according to unit size.

According to the provincial government, the other 15 units are for cis and transgender women, non-binary and Two-Spirit people and children leaving violence and need a permanent place to stay.

B.C. government officials said rental rates will be calculated based on 30 per cent of the resident’s income, or the provincial shelter rate for those on income or disability assistance.

“These homes will help support families, seniors and women and children leaving violence with safe and secure housing to thrive and prosper,” said Grace Lore, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity. “Our government will continue to work with our partners to make sure women and children have the homes and support they need to leave violent situations.”

Invermere Farmhouse will be managed by Family Dynamix Association and will offer support to women and children living in the building, such as life-skills training, crisis counselling and poverty-reduction services.

The development is near a number of amenities and services within Invermere, including grocery stores and schools.

Invermere Farmhouse was constructed through a partnership between the B.C. government, Columbia Basin Trust, the District of Invermere and Family Dynamix Association.

“The District of Invermere is very happy to see the completion of the Invermere Farmhouse townhouse development. The 30 new affordable rental homes for people in Invermere with low incomes are a very welcome development in our community,” said Mayor Al Miller. “The new housing units will soon become homes for families and seniors, including people needing support services. Invermere is grateful to everyone who worked together to deliver this wonderful project.”
