Robert Brent “Bob” Thirsk, Former Canadian Space Agency Astronaut on-line zoom session with Cranbrook Air Cadets

552 Key City Royal Canadian Air Cadets Cranbrook enjoyed and educational on-line session with former Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Bob Thirsk.

Bob proudly served as Chancellor of the University of Calgary from 2014-18. He is a member of the Order of British Columbia and an Officer of the Order of Canada. Robert Thirsk High School in Calgary is named in his honour. He has received several honorary degrees, including a Doctor of Laws from his home institution The University of Calgary.

Former Canadian Space Agency astronaut Bob Thirsk was a zoom online
guest for members of Cranbrook’s 552 Key City Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron.
The cadets had lots of good questions about how our bodies adapt in space.

Robert Thirsk, was the first Canadian astronaut to make a long-duration spaceflight.
In 1996 he was in space for nearly 17 days, and in 2009 he flew to the International Space Station,
where he stayed for almost 188 days. Between his two missions, Thirsk spent more time in space than all other Canadian astronauts combined.

A very special day for 552 Key City Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron here
in Cranbrook.
They were invited to meet and talk to former Canadian Space Agency astronaut
Bob Thirsk.
He explained that excitement overcame fear head of lift off.

Bob Thirsk holds the Canadian records for the most time spent in space (204 days 18 hours).
He became an officer of the Order of Canada (OC) in 2013 and was named to the Order of British Columbia (OBC) in 2012.

Cranbrook’s 552 Key City Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron came away
from an online session with Former Canadian Space Agency astronaut Bob Thirsk
excited to know where the future could take them.
Thirsk learned French as a 2nd language but he had to learn speak Russian.

Thirsk was asked about blasting off to Mars.

Thisk became the first Canadian astronaut to go on a long-duration expedition aboard the ISS.
He and two crewmates launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on May 27 2009
aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
When their Soyuz vehicle docked with the nearly complete Station two days later,
the ISS became home for the first time to a permanent crew of six.
