Fernie Fire Rescue responded to two separate structure fires Wednesday evening, but quick work by residents avoided serious damage.
“In each incident more serious property damage was avoided by individuals in the area who knew how to properly operate a fire extinguisher, and were able to contain the fire before crews arrived on scene,” said the City of Fernie.
It’s unclear what caused both fires in the separate incidents but there was no significant fire or damage as a result of the extinguishers on hand.
Since the two fires and the subsequent response by the residents, the City of Fernie is reminding the community about the importance of having a fire extinguisher readily available and knowing how to use it.

As well, Fernie Fire Rescue will be holding a Family Safety Day on September 21, 2019, where fire safety information will be shared including how to utilize a fire extinguisher in case of an emergency.
