Boil Water Notice Issued in Radium

UPDATE: Radium Boil Water Notice Remains in Effect (August 15, 2019)

The Village of Radium Hot Springs has issued a Boil Water Notice following a mechanical issue at the drinking water treatment plant.

According to the municipality, the issued resulted in a “POOR” water quality reading due to increased turbidity and cloudiness.

Both Interior Health and the Village of Radium Hot Springs have recommended that all users of the drinking water system either drink boiled water or find a safe alternative until further notice.

“Water intended for drinking, washing fruits and vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute. Boiled water should then be refrigerated in a clean, covered container,” said the Village of Radium Hot Springs. “Customers could also choose to use bottled or distilled water, or water that has been filtered through a well-maintained treatment device.”

As turbidity increases, so do the apparent health risks, especially to newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

“Contaminants such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites can attach themselves to the suspended particles in turbid water. These particles can then interfere with disinfection, limiting chlorine’s ability to remove or inactivate the contaminants.”

Owners of all public facilities must also post the Boil Water Notice to all sinks or drinking water fountains accessible to the public, or turn off the taps as an alternative.

“The Village of Radium Hot Springs is taking additional measures to reduce risk. Interior Health has been fully involved, and the public will be notified when conditions change or water quality has improved.”

As well, the Radium Hot Springs pools are closed as a result of a mudslide at McKay Creek
